How Does the IBAN Calculation Work?

For Norway, the IBAN consists of:

  • Country code: NO
  • 2 check digits
  • 11-digit account number (BBAN: 4 digits bank code + 6 digits account + 1 national check digit)

The check digits are calculated using the MOD-97 algorithm:

  1. Combine the account number + 'NO' + '00'.
  2. Convert letters to numbers (A=10, B=11, etc.).
  3. Calculate modulo 97 of the large number.
  4. Check digits = 98 - remainder.
