Is the IBAN Calculation Accurate?
Yes, the calculation in our IBAN calculator is accurate for Norwegian account numbers. It follows the standardised method for generating IBANs based on the ISO 13616 standard. Let’s explain it in more detail.
How Does the IBAN Calculation Work?
For Norway, the IBAN consists of:
- Country code: NO
- 2 check digits
- 11-digit account number (BBAN: 4 digits bank code + 6 digits account + 1 national check digit)
The check digits are calculated using the MOD-97 algorithm:
- Combine the account number + 'NO' + '00'.
- Convert letters to numbers (A=10, B=11, etc.).
- Calculate modulo 97 of the large number.
- Check digits = 98 - remainder.
This method is simple yet robust, ensuring the IBAN is valid internationally.
Is the Calculation the Same for All Countries?
Yes, the algorithm for calculating check digits (MOD-97) is the same for all countries using IBAN. However, the structure and length of the national account number (BBAN) vary between countries. For example:
- Norway: 11 digits
- Germany: 18 digits
- United Kingdom: 18 digits, but with a different structure
Our calculator is specifically designed for Norwegian account numbers, but the principle is universal.
